Arsenal vs Man United : première mi-temps
29e min : BUT ! ARSENAL !
27e min : BUT ! MAN UNITED !
L’arbitre a raté celui-là, point final.

Arsenal host Manchester United in a huge early-season Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The Gunners are unbeaten through their opening three top-flight games in 2023/24 but were held to a 2-2 draw by 10-man Fulham at home last time out.

United fought back to defeat Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford, winning 3-2 after falling 2-0 down after just four minutes, and they sit just a point behind Arsenal heading into this match.

The meeting in north London, which is the final match for these sides before the September international window, will be an interesting litmus test of their credentials this season. Victory for either side would inspire positivity around their progress, while defeat would likely encourage significant scrutiny of their form.

The Sporting News will be following the Arsenal vs. Man United match live, providing score updates, commentary, and highlights as they happen.

Arsenal vs Man United: First Half

40th min: Now Bukayo Saka is booked for a nasty one, going down two-footed into the shin of Bruno Fernandes after losing possession in his own half. It’s a weird one as Saka actually wins the foul after being challenged from behind, but Saka’s actions after being fouled earn him the booking.

It’s an ugly tackle, and there is a quick VAR review for violent conduct, but in the end the officials stick with yellow. So, Saka wins a free-kicked but is booked in the process. Fun!

38th min: Victory Lindelof brings down Eddie Nketiah who attempts to latch onto a Bukayo Saka clearance on the left touchline. Lindelof is booked for his efforts, and while it was close to a red for two separate issues — the height of the challenge and the last-man aura, neither is severe enough to see Lindelof off. Anthony Taylor gets this one spot on.

34th min: Kai Havertz commits a foul in midfield, and is lucky to get away without a booking. Then Bruno Fernandes gets a talking to from referee Anthony Taylor who did not appreciate the Manchester United playmaker’s constant chatter.

29th min: GOAL! ARESNAL! Martin Odegaard has produced an immediate response! This game has exploded to life, with just 1:15 between the two goals!

Eddie Nketiah begins the buildup on the left edge of the penalty area, and his cutback comes to Odegaard at the top of the 18-year-box who’s completely, utterly unmarked. A calamity at the back from Man United!

27th min: GOAL! MAN UNITED! Marcus Rashford scores against the run of play to put the visitors ahead! It’s given away by Kai Havertz under heavy Man United pressure, and they go the length of the pitch on the counter, with Rashford finishing by cutting in on his right and firing his effort off the inside of the post.

It’s highway robbery by Manchester United!

25th min: Antony is whistled for a foul, and then the Manchester United winger blasts the ball away in frustration. That’s an automatic booking under the new rules…but Anthony Taylor refuses to give one, which sets the Arsenal players into a frenzy. The referee’s missed that one, full stop.

22nd min: Play is stopped as Mikel Arteta is incensed with Anthony Taylor’s refusal to blow his whistle after challenges on both Bukayo Saka and Ben White leave the two Arsenal players on the turf. Not too much in them, but the emotions in this fixture have everyone on edge.

18th min: Arsenal continue to put the Manchester United defence under pressure, with Diogo Dalot forced to head a cross out of play over the end line. The ensuing corner is right to the head of Declan Rice but he loops it over the crossbar harmlessly.

13th min: Chance, Arsenal! KAI HAVERTZ HAS FLUBBED A HUGE CHANCE! The former Chelsea forward has the ball fortunately bounce right into his lap with a wide open goal to shoot at, but he completely mis-hits the ball! He barely even makes contact! How has a professional footballer managed to produce that effort??

11th min: Bukayo Saka gets on the ball down the right edge of the penalty area but is immediately closed down by two Manchester United defenders, and then Martin Odegaard is dispossessed at the top of the box. Manchester United are struggling to progress the ball into the attacking half as Casemiro has been guilty of a few long giveaways.

7th min: Manchester United are looking to press Arsenal high up the pitch, and it’s causing some problems in possession but has yet to generate a truly dangerous turnover.

3rd min: Arsenal have begun the game with the majority of the early possession, against a Manchester United side that look more like Newcastle in these truly awful away kits.

Kickoff: The match is under way from The Emirates! Arsenal hosting Manchester United in one of the best rivalries the Premier League has to offer. The exceptional Jon Champion opens his NBC broadcast by labeling this fixture « competitive, combustable, compelling. » A perfect encapsulation.

Arsenal vs Man United: Pre-match commentary, analysis, stats, and more

15 mins to kick: Man United manager Erik ten Hag has stated that both Rasmus Hojlund and Sergio Reguilon both start from the bench due to their lack of training with the club. That would seem to suggest they have a clear way into the XI if they can prove themselves between matches.

30 mins to kick: Manchester United are looking to kick a poor recent away trend at « Big Six » clubs, where if you add Newcastle to that mix, they’ve lost eight and drawn four of their last 12, notably without a single win. Most recently, that includes a 2-0 defeat at Spurs to begin this young season.

45 mins to kick: Manchester United can become the first team to 100 wins over Arsenal in all competitions with victory today, while newly minted PFA Young Player of the Year Bukayo Saka is hoping to find the back of the net in a fourth straight meeting between these two clubs.

1 hour to kickoff: Lineups are in! Rasmus Hojlund starts his life at Manchester United on the bench, but the understanding seems to be he will come on for his debut at some point. The same is true for Arsenal as Gabriel Jesus isn’t ready for his full return, with Eddie Nketiah remaining up front and the Brazilian on the bench.

Arsenal have another injury that does affect their squad, with Thomas Partey having picked up a groin problem in training, which sees Ben White slide over to full-back and Gabriel enter the defensive unit.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: Pundits arguing about which club is bigger, a tradition unlike any other. Always thought it was a bit pointless, but it gets people talking I guess!

1 hour 30 mins to kick: The Manchester United sale continues to simmer in the background, with still no movement on pulling the trigger, and it feels like even journalists are getting fed up with how long it’s taking the Glazer family to make a decision.

1 hour 45 mins to kick: Arsenal have their own returning star at the striker position. Gabriel Jesus will reportedly make his full return from injury in this match, having come on just a minute from full-time against Fulham last time out. He’ll reportedly start today, and that will be a welcome sight for Arsenal despite the fact Eddie Nketiah filled in admirably.

Jesus has never scored against Manchester United, but is unbeaten when he does find the net in Premier League play.

2 hours before kickoff: Welcome to coverage of Arsenal vs Manchester United from The Sporting News!

The big team news today surrounds whether new striker Rasmus Hojlund will start for Manchester United. The 20-year-old Dane has been sidelined thus far thanks to an injury picked up prior to his transfer, but he’s reportedly in the mix today. It’s not clear whether he will start, although Manchester United teased his involvement on social media, adding fuel to the fire that he could be deployed from the get-go.

Arsenal vs Man United starting lineups, team news

Eddie Nketiah was a doubt with a knee issue, but he gets the start as Gabriel Jesus only makes the bench again. Oleksandr Zinchenko is also fit to start and Takehiro Tomiyasu is back from suspension.

Thomas Partey misses out after a groin injury in training, which sees Gabriel enter the lineup while Ben White slides over to full-back.

Arsenal starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Ramsdale (GK) — White, Gabriel, Saliba, Zinchenko — Odegaard, Rice, Havertz — Saka, Nketiah, Martinelli.

Ten Hag will need to reshuffle his defence with Raphael Varane set for a spell on the sidelines through injury and neither Luke Shaw nor Tyrell Malacia available. Victor Lindelof will likely start at centre-back.

Man United starting lineup (4-2-3-1 right to left): Onana (GK) — Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Martinez, Dalot — Casemiro, Eriksen — Anthony, Fernandes, Rashford — Martial.
